Hearth is a meal kit subscription designed to get families cooking together, giving kids a chance to learn practical skills while making mealtime something they can take part in. The idea grew out of research around cooking as a learning and bonding experience, but also from my own experience growing up in the South and helping my mom cook and bake.
The identity draws a lot of inspiration from community cookbooks and the way they reflect people coming together through food. The name Hearth comes from the traditional center of the home, where meals were prepared and people gathered. That idea became the basis for the mark and the larger visual system. For the logotype and brand type, I referenced hand lettering from an old community cookbook I found in my grandmother’s collection and developed it into a type style of my own. That became one of the main threads connecting the packaging, recipe cards, illustrations, and subscription box.
